Just as there are different types of arthritis, there are also different types of pain. Even your own pain may vary from day to day.
Each person needs a pain management plan. What works for one person may not work for someone else. You may need to try several different treatments before you find the one that works for you.
Long-lasting pain, like the kind that accompanies osteoarthritis, is different. While it tells you that something is wrong, it often isn’t as easy to relieve. Managing this type of pain is essential to enhance your quality of life and sense of well-being.
Many people with arthritis have found that by learning and practicing pain management skills, they can reduce their pain.
Causes of Pain:
- Inflammation, the process that causes the redness and swelling in your joints;
- Damage to joint tissues, which results from the disease process or from stress, injury or pressure on the joints;
- Fatigue that results from the disease process, which can make your pain seem worse and harder to handle;
- Depression or stress, which results from limited movement or no longer doing activities you enjoy. You can get caught in a cycle of pain, limited/lost abilities, stress and depression that makes managing pain and arthritis seem more difficult.

This past week has been bad. Every morning my hands have been the worst in terms of mobility. I can barely put on my on damn socks they hurt so bad. Once I sit down, its a battle to get back up under my own power due to my knees and ankles. The pain meds I have been taking are not working as well as they normally should since I have been taking them for years now and my body has built up an immunity to them so now I have to take double the amount I would normally take to get the same effect to take the edge off. My next appointment I am going to try and get different pain meds and alternate between the two so that they may work better. Also going to try and get my doctor to up the corticosteroids. I can’t believe I am still sane after all I have been through so far…

I am back to the point where I can not put on my own socks with out being in a lot of pain due to my hands and ankles being so stiff and swollen. I am no longer on Embrel and can not afford any of the new meds for arthritis. I am just taking pain meds, anti-inflammatory meds and steroids along with Prozac for depression and pain. The pain that I feel now is normally reserved for the winter months.
My morning Pain Rating is about 6 or 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. Evening Pain is around 3 or 4 for the past few weeks. I don’t see this getting any better. This royally sucks.
